LAN Manager/X Demonstration Software This article is for SRs, SEs, and CEs who need to be able to demonstrate HP LAN Manager/X and those who need to run LAN Manager/X for educational and/or support purposes. LAN Manager/X software is copy protected. This means a license, made up of a serial number and an activation key, is required to start the server. You must have these two numbers for the LM/X software to operate. The LM/X demo software is distributed with the SE Distribution for LAN Manager/X. To recieve the demo software, you must be on this SE Distribution. **Please see note regarding distributions** Those on the Internal Distribution for LM/X have received the required license with distributions of version 1.1 and 1.3. If you are not on Internal Distribution for LM/X, you should look for an SE or CE who is on the LAN Manager/X Software Distribution. (It is on the same distribution as HP-UX so it should not be too hard to find one.) Each time the LM/X software is enhanced, those on Internal Distribution are sent a copy of the new server software along with two licenses. (Remember, the license includes two numbers; a serial number and an activation key). One license may be used to install the full-function, unlimited-user version of LAN Manager/X at a customer site for 30 days. This allows customers to evaluate the product before making a purchasing decision. The second license is a full-function, 8-user version which can be used for educational, support, and demos purposes at the sales office. The SE Distribution for LAN Manager/X is the only means by which demo software may be obtained. If your office does not receive the distribution and you are asked to provide a demo, you will need to sign up for the service. If you should have questions regarding the distribution, contact the Software Distribution Contracts person who is probably in the SSO Hardware and Software Contracts Office. The Internal Subscription Service Numbers for distributions including LM/X are as follows: 5062-7197 for Area and Branch offices ($5000/year) 5062-7196 for Response Centers and Customer Education Centers ($8000/year) 5062-7195 for Field Demonstration and Education Centers ($5000/year) The above distributions include software, manuals, and licenses (serial numbers and activation keys). For documentation only, the following Library Distribution is available: 5062-7179 for Software Libraries **NOTE** SRDO/SRDE send out the distributions for a LIMITED TIME ONLY following any enhancement. To receive the distribution, you must be on their mailing list when the update is ready to go. If you sign up for the service after the distribution has taken place, you will not receive anything until the next distribution. If you have missed the distribution and no one else in your office receives it, to get the LM/X software, place an order for B1003C for Series 300/400 and/or B1011C for Series 700/800. Allow 3 - 4 weeks for delivery unless the order is expedited. The product may be ordered at TAC. LAN Manager/X Copy Protection The HP LAN Manager/X product is a licensed product. To install the software, the user is prompted for the license number which is a combination of a serial number and an activation key. These numbers must be entered correctly in order to start the server. There are four different types of licenses. 1. New customer license - This license is shipped to new customers by manufacturing. Customers may choose a 8/16/32/64/128/256/512 or 1024 user license. Servers using this type of license will not allow additional users to connect once the licensed number of users have connected until someone disconnects. The license enforces the number of active connections to that which the customer purchased. The server software will also check to see if another server on the network is using the same license. If yes, the server startup will abort and display a license violation message. The licenses shipped with the B1003B/B1011B (version 1.1) products will work with the B1003C/B1011C (version 1.3) products. 2. Support-Customer license - This type of license was given to all customers who were on LM/X Software Materials Update Services when copy protection was added to the product. This happened in August of 1991 when the product numbers changed from B1003A/B1011A to B1003B/B1011B. Servers using this type of license do not limit the number of users to the number licensed. However, customers using more users than originally purchased are obliged to purchase the appropriate new license, with credit being given for the old license. The server software will check to see if there is another server on the network with the smae license. If yes, the server startup will abort and display a licnese violation message. The licenses shipped with the B1003B/B1011B (version 1.1) products will work with the B1003C/B1011C (version 1.3) products. 3. Employee license - A license which allows 8 users on the server was included with the SE distributions for both the 1.1 and 1.3 releases of LM/X. (Note: there was no 1.2 version) When the server software is starting it checks to see if there is another server on the network with the same license. If yes, the server startup will abort and display a license violation message. The LAN Manager/X 1.1 SE license DO NOT work on LAN Manager/X 1.3 and vice versa. 4. Demonstration license - A license which allows an unlimited number of users on the server was included with the SE distributions for both the 1.1 and 1.3 releases of LM/X. (Note: there was no 1.2 version) When the server software is starting it DOES NOT check to see if there is another server on the network with the smae license. Thus these licenses may be used to demonstrate multiple server configurations. These licenses are valid for only 30 days. Once the 30 days has expired, the customer must purchase and add a "New Customer license" to continue using LM/X on the server. The LM/X 1.1 demonstration licenses do not work on LM/X 1.3 and vice versa. How to Get Help with Licenses for LAN Manager/X If you have a customer who is having a problem with LAN Manager/X licenses, please do the following: 1. Verify that the customer has purchased a license for each LM/X server. The license for a server should be for the largest number of LM users which will be connected to the server at any one time. 2. That a serial number and activation key have been entered for each server. It is the last activation key entered which is used to determine how many users are allowed at any one time. 3. That no two servers on the network are using the same serial number and activation keys. If any activation key on a system is on any other system, LM/X will only start on one of them. If the customer has not purchased the correct license, the sales rep can help him do so. If the customer purchased the correct license but did not receive it or has lost it, make a list of the sales order number and call your Order Administrator to verify the purchase. A replacement license can they be supplied. If the customer has the correct license and the numbers are entered correctly, and the server will not start due to a licensing problem, please call the Response Center.
